Jeffery A. Bowen, Ph.D.

Jeff Bowen is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Bridgewater State College located in Southeastern Massachusetts about half way between Boston and Cape Cod.  He has been interested in photography for most of his life and has been fortunate enough to combine his love of photography with his passion for Imaging.  It was through this combination that he developed Kaleidofly.  Kaleidofly began as he started helping his friend and colleague, Dr. Kevin Curry, capture images of dragonflies.  Dr. Curry is studying something called "fluctuating assymetry" that helps scientist look for left-right differences in animals.  It is Dr. Curry's hypothesis that an increase in this fluctuating assymetry can be an indicator of ecological wellbeing.  The greater the differences between left and right, the more developmental problems the organsim has and it more be a result of environmental toxins that have accumulated in these predatores.  It was through these studies that Jeff became fascinated by the beauty of these animals and began to manipulate the images.

When not working on Kaleidofly, Jeff is very busy working in the classroom and has become a popular and well respected professor at the college.  Without question, the chance to work closely with students is his greatest joy.  He typically works with four or five undergraduates in the lab he shares with his colleagure and friend, Dr. Meri Krevosky.  Together they have had great success in training students for life beyond college.  In this capacity, Jeff is able to use his talents for Image Analysis and share his great enthusiasm for imaging cells...or animals...or people!  His students continue to be the greatest joy of his professional life.

At home, he shares his life with his talented and beautiful bride of "way too many" years, Meghan.  She shows great patience with his many hobbies and distractions.  When not playing with his camera and working on Kaleidofly, Jeff can often be found in his woodworking shop building the next piece of furniture for the house or out on the nearest lake or river paddling around in his kayak or hiking the trails with their dog, Daxter.
